Addiction and Recovery Counseling
Recovery is a journey not a destination
The disease of addiction is a chronic disorder that if left untreated, will be detrimental to the person and those around them. Addictions can temporarily provide the illusion of confidence, control, validation or other emotions lacking in one’s life. As time passes, the person may feel the need to use more to get their desired effects, and soon a person may need more to simply feel “normal.” The person may find themselves doing destructive things just to maintain this sense of “normalcy.”
Simply just “stopping” without help is an unrealistic expectation. Addiction changes the brain’s reward system that is responsible for producing feelings of pleasure. The abuse of addictive substances and behaviors triggers this system which leads to a continuous cycle of destructive behavior.
The stigma attached to addiction leaves the person feeling ashamed, alone, helpless and hopeless. The recovery journey is not easy as one needs to address the root of the problem. Many people recover, there is hope.
